Deuteronomy 8:11-17
New Catholic Bible
11 Take heed not to forget the Lord, your God, by not observing his commandments, decrees, and statutes that I have given you today. 12 Otherwise, when you have eaten your fill and you have built fine houses and are living in them 13 and your herds and your flocks have grown large, and your silver and your gold have multiplied, in fact all that you own has multiplied, 14 then your heart might become proud and you will forget the Lord, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, the land of your slavery. 15 He led you through a vast and terrible wilderness where there were snakes and fiery scorpions and thirst, where when there was no water he brought water forth from the hard rock for you. 16 He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something with which your fathers were not familiar, to abase you and to test you, so that later on it might go well with you.
17 [a]You might think to yourself, “It is through my strength and the might of my own hand that I have acquired this wealth.”
