Isaiah 4-6
Legacy Standard Bible
4 And seven women will take hold of (A)one man in that day, saying, “We will eat our own bread and wear our own clothes, only let us be called by your name; (B)take away our reproach!”
The Branch of Yahweh Glorified
2 In that day the (C)Branch of Yahweh will be beautiful and glorious, and the (D)fruit of the earth will be the pride and the [a]honor of (E)those of Israel who escape. 3 It will be that he who (F)remains in Zion and is left in Jerusalem will be called (G)holy—everyone who is (H)written down for life in Jerusalem. 4 When the Lord has washed away the filth of the (I)daughters of Zion and rinsed away the (J)bloodshed of Jerusalem from her midst, by the (K)spirit of judgment and the (L)spirit of burning, 5 then Yahweh will create over the whole area of Mount Zion and over her convocation (M)a cloud by day, even smoke, and the brightness of a flaming fire by night; for over all the (N)glory will be a canopy. 6 And there will be a (O)booth to give shade from the heat by day, and refuge and a hiding place from the storm and the rain.
The Song of the Vineyard
5 Let me sing now for my well-beloved
A song of my beloved concerning His vineyard.
My well-beloved had a (P)vineyard on [b]a fertile hill.
2 He dug it all around, removed its stones,
And planted it with [c]the (Q)choicest vine.
And He built a tower in the middle of it
And also hewed out a [d]wine vat in it;
Then He (R)hoped for it to produce good grapes,
But it produced only [e]worthless ones.
3 “So now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah,
(S)Please judge between Me and My vineyard.
4 (T)What more was there to do for My vineyard [f]that I have not done in it?
Why, when I hoped for it to produce good grapes did it produce [g]worthless ones?
5 So now let Me tell you what I am going to do to My vineyard:
I will (U)remove its hedge, and it will be consumed;
I will (V)break down its wall, and it will become (W)trampled ground.
6 I will (X)lay it waste;
It will not be pruned or hoed,
But briars and thorns will come up.
I will also command the clouds to (Y)rain no rain on it.”
7 For the (Z)vineyard of Yahweh of hosts is the house of Israel
And the men of Judah His delightful plant.
Thus He hoped for justice, but behold, (AA)bloodshed;
For righteousness, but behold, a cry of distress.
Woes to Those Who Call Evil Good
8 Woe to those who (AB)add house to house and join field to field,
Until there is no more room,
So that you have to live alone in the midst of the land!
9 In my ears Yahweh of hosts has sworn, “Surely, (AC)many houses shall become (AD)desolate,
Even great and good ones, without inhabitants.
10 For (AE)ten [h]acres of vineyard will yield only one [i]bath of wine,
And a [j](AF)homer of seed will yield but an [k]ephah of grain.”
11 Woe to those who rise early in the morning that they may pursue (AG)strong drink,
Who stay up late in the evening that wine may inflame them!
12 And their banquets are accompanied by lyre and (AH)harp, by tambourine and flute, and by wine;
But they (AI)do not look upon the deeds of Yahweh,
Nor do they see the work of His hands.
13 Therefore My people go into exile for their (AJ)lack of knowledge;
And [l]their (AK)honorable men are famished,
And their multitude is parched with thirst.
14 Therefore (AL)Sheol has enlarged its [m]throat and opened its mouth without limit;
And [n]Jerusalem’s majesty, her multitude, her rumbling, and the exultant within her, descend into it.
15 So the common man will be bowed down and the man of importance will be made low,
(AM)The eyes of the lofty also will be made low.
16 But (AN)Yahweh of hosts will be (AO)lofty in judgment,
And the holy God will show Himself (AP)holy in righteousness.
17 (AQ)Then the lambs will graze as in their pasture,
And sojourners will eat in the waste places of the [o]wealthy.
18 Woe to those who drag (AR)iniquity with the cords of worthlessness,
And sin as if with cart ropes,
19 (AS)Who say, “Let Him hurry, let Him hasten His work, that we may see it;
And let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw near
And come to pass, that we may know it!”
20 Woe to those who (AT)call evil good and good evil,
Who [p](AU)substitute darkness for light and light for darkness,
Who [q]substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!
21 Woe to those who are (AV)wise in their own eyes
And understanding in their own [r]sight!
22 (AW)Woe to those who are mighty men in drinking wine
And valiant men in mixing strong drink,
23 (AX)Who [s]declare the wicked righteous for a bribe,
And (AY)remove the [t]righteous standing of the ones who are [u]righteous!
24 Therefore, (AZ)as a tongue of fire consumes stubble
And dry grass collapses into the flame,
So their (BA)root will become (BB)like rot and their blossom [v]blow away as dust;
For they have (BC)rejected the law of Yahweh of hosts
And the word of the Holy One of Israel they have spurned.
25 On this account, the (BD)anger of Yahweh has burned against His people,
And He has stretched out His hand against them and struck them down.
And the (BE)mountains trembled, and their (BF)corpses [w]lay like refuse in the middle of the streets.
(BG)For all this His anger is not turned back,
But His (BH)hand is still stretched out.
26 He will also lift up a (BI)standard to the [x]distant nations,
And will (BJ)whistle for it (BK)from the ends of the earth;
And behold, it will (BL)come with speed swiftly.
27 (BM)No one in it is weary or stumbles,
None slumbers or sleeps;
Nor is the (BN)belt at its waist undone,
Nor its sandal strap broken.
28 [y](BO)Its arrows are sharp and all its bows are bent;
The hoofs of its horses [z]seem like flint and its chariot (BP)wheels like a whirlwind.
29 Its (BQ)roaring is like a lioness, and it roars like young lions;
It growls and (BR)seizes the prey
And carries it off with (BS)no one to deliver it.
30 And it will (BT)growl over it in that day like the roaring of the sea.
If one (BU)looks to the land, behold, there is darkness and distress;
Even the light is darkened by its clouds.
Isaiah’s Vision of Yahweh
6 In the year of (BV)King Uzziah’s death (BW)I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, with the train of His robe filling the temple. 2 Seraphim stood above Him, (BX)each having six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one called out to another and said,
4 And the [ab]foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called out, while the (CA)house of God was filling with smoke. 5 Then I said,
“(CB)Woe is me, for I am ruined!
For I am a man of (CC)unclean lips,
And I live among a (CD)people of unclean lips;
For my eyes have seen the (CE)King, Yahweh of hosts.”
6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a burning coal in his hand, which he had taken from the (CF)altar with tongs. 7 And he (CG)touched my mouth with it and said, “Behold, this has touched your lips; and (CH)your iniquity is taken away, and your sin is atoned for.”
Yahweh Sends Isaiah
8 Then I heard the (CI)voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then (CJ)I said, “Here am I. Send me!” 9 He said, “Go, and tell this people:
‘Keep on (CK)hearing, but do not understand;
Keep on seeing, but do not know.’
10 (CL)Render the hearts of this people [ac](CM)insensitive,
Their ears [ad]dull,
And their eyes [ae]dim,
(CN)Lest they see with their eyes,
And hear with their ears,
And understand with their hearts,
And return and be healed.”
11 Then I said, “Lord, (CO)how long?” And He said,
“Until (CP)cities are devastated and without inhabitant,
Houses are without people,
And the land is devastated to desolation,
12 And Yahweh has (CQ)removed men far away,
And the [af](CR)forsaken places are many in the midst of the land.
13 Yet there will be a tenth portion in it,
And it will again be subject to burning,
Like a terebinth or like an (CS)oak
Whose stump remains when it is felled.
The (CT)holy seed is its stump.”
