¹⁶ Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’^(A)

¹⁷ Jesus responded, ‘Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah,^[a](B) because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father in heaven.^{(C) 18} And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church,^(D) and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.
