The descendants of Caleb

¹⁸ Hezron's son Caleb married Azubah, who was also called Jerioth.^[a] Her sons were Jesher, Shobab and Ardon. ¹⁹ When Azubah died, Caleb married Ephrath. She gave birth to a son called Hur. ²⁰ Hur became the father of Uri. Uri became the father of Bezalel.

²¹ After some time, when Hezron was 60 years old, he married Makir's daughter. She was Gilead's sister. Hezron had sex with her and she gave birth to a son called Segub.

²² Segub became the father of Jair. Jair ruled 23 towns in the region of Gilead. ²³ But later Geshur and Aram attacked Jair's towns and took them for themselves. They also took Kenath and the 60 small towns around it.

All those people were descendants of Gilead's father, Makir.

²⁴ After Hezron died, Caleb married his father's widow, Ephrathah. She gave birth to a son for him. His name was Ashhur, and he became the father of Tekoa.

The descendants of Jerahmeel

²⁵ Hezron's firstborn son was Jerahmeel. Jerahmeel's sons were: Ram (his firstborn son), Bunah, Oren, Ozem and Ahijah. ²⁶ Jerahmeel had another wife, called Atarah. She gave birth to Onam.

²⁷ The sons of Jerahmeel's firstborn son, Ram, were: Maaz, Jamin and Eker.

²⁸ Onam's sons were: Shammai and Jada.

Shammai's sons were: Nadab and Abishur.

²⁹ Abishur's wife was called Abihail. She gave birth to Ahban and Molid.

³⁰ Nadab's sons were: Seled and Appaim. When Seled died, he had no sons.

³¹ Appaim's son was Ishi. Ishi's son was Sheshan. Sheshan's son was Ahlai.

³² The sons of Jada, Shammai's brother, were: Jether and Jonathan. When Jether died, he had no sons.

³³ Jonathan's sons were: Peleth and Zaza.

All those men were Jerahmeel's descendants.

³⁴ Sheshan did not have any sons but he did have daughters. He had a servant from Egypt called Jarha. ³⁵ Sheshan gave his daughter to his servant Jarha, to be his wife. She gave birth to a son for him, called Attai.

³⁶ Attai became the father of Nathan. Nathan became the father of Zabad. ³⁷ Zabad became the father of Ephlal. Ephlal became the father of Obed. ³⁸ Obed became the father of Jehu. Jehu became the father of Azariah. ³⁹ Azariah became the father of Helez. Helez became the father of Eleasah. ⁴⁰ Eleasah became the father of Sismai. Sismai became the father of Shallum. ⁴¹ Shallum became the father of Jekamiah. Jekamiah became the father of Elishama.

More descendants of Caleb

⁴² The sons of Jerahmeel's brother, Caleb, were: Mesha, his firstborn son. Mesha became the father of Ziph. His son Mareshah became the father of Hebron.

⁴³ Hebron's sons were: Korah, Tappuah, Rekem and Shema. ⁴⁴ Shema became the father of Raham, who became the father of Jorkeam. Rekem became the father of Shammai. ⁴⁵ Shammai's son was Maon, who became the father of Beth-Zur.

⁴⁶ Caleb had a slave wife called Ephah. She gave birth to Haran, Moza and Gazez. Haran became the father of Gazez.

⁴⁷ Jahdai's sons were: Regem, Jotham, Geshan, Pelet, Ephah and Shaaph.

⁴⁸ Caleb's other slave wife Maakah gave birth to Sheber, Tirhanah, ⁴⁹ Shaaph and Sheva. Shaaph became the father of Madmannah. Sheva became the father of Makbenah and Gibea. Caleb had a daughter called Aksah.

^50-51 Those people were Caleb's descendants.

The sons of Ephrath's firstborn son, Hur, were: Shobal, Salma and Hareph. Shobal became the ancestor of Kiriath-Jearim. Salma became the ancestor of Bethlehem. Hareph became the ancestor of Beth-Gader.

⁵² The sons of Shobal, the ancestor of Kiriath-Jearim, were: Haroeh, half the Manahath people ⁵³ and the clans of Kiriath-Jearim: the Ithrites, Puthites, Shumathites and Mishraites. The Zorathites and Eshtaolites were descendants of these clans.

⁵⁴ Salma's descendants were: the people of Bethlehem, the people of Netophath, the clan of Atroth-Beth-Joab, half the Manahath people and the Zorites. ⁵⁵ His descendants also included the people who lived in Jabez. They were people who could write down important things. Their clans were called the Tirathites, Shimeathites and Sucathites. These clans were descendants of Hammath, the Kenite man. He was also the ancestor of the Rekabites.

The sons of David

3 These sons of David were born in Hebron: The firstborn son was Amnon. His mother was Ahinoam from Jezreel. The second son was Daniel. His mother was Abigail from Carmel. ² The third son was Absalom. His mother was Maakah, the daughter of Talmai, king of Geshur. The fourth son was Adonijah. His mother was Haggith. ³ The fifth son was Shephatiah. His mother was Abital. The sixth son was Ithream. His mother was David's wife, Eglah.

⁴ Those six sons of David were all born in Hebron. David ruled in Hebron for seven years and six months. Then he ruled in Jerusalem for 33 years. ⁵ These are the names of David's sons who were born in Jerusalem: Shimea, Shobab, Nathan and Solomon. The mother of these four sons was Ammiel's daughter, Bathsheba. ⁶ David had nine other sons: Ibhar, Elishama, Eliphelet, ⁷ Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, ⁸ Elishama, Eliada and Eliphelet. ⁹ Those were all the sons of David's wives. Tamar was their sister. He also had slave wives who gave birth to sons for him.

Solomon's descendants

¹⁰ Solomon's son was Rehoboam. Rehoboam's son was Abijah. Abijah's son was Asa. Asa's son was Jehoshaphat. ¹¹ Jehoshaphat's son was Jehoram. Jehoram's son was Ahaziah. Ahaziah's son was Joash. ¹² Joash's son was Amaziah. Amaziah's son was Azariah. Azariah's son was Jotham.^{[b] 13} Jotham's son was Ahaz. Ahaz's son was Hezekiah. Hezekiah's son was Manasseh. ¹⁴ Manasseh's son was Amon. Amon's son was Josiah.

¹⁵ Josiah's sons: His firstborn son was Johanan. His second son was Jehoiakim. His third son was Zedekiah. His fourth son was Shallum.

¹⁶ Jehoiakim's son was Jehoiachin. Jehoiachin's son was Zedekiah.^[c]

¹⁷ Jeconiah's enemies took him away as their prisoner.

His sons were: Shealtiel, ¹⁸ Malkiram, Pedaiah, Shenazzar, Jekamiah, Hoshama and Nedabiah.

¹⁹ Pedaiah's sons were: Zerubbabel and Shimei.

Zerubbabel's sons were: Meshullam and Hananiah. Their sister was Shelomith. ²⁰ Zerubbabel also had five other sons: Hashubah, Ohel, Berekiah, Hasadiah and Jushab-Hesed.

²¹ The descendants of Hananiah were: Pelatiah and Jeshaiah. Jeshaiah's son was Rephaiah. Rephaiah's son was Arnan. Arnan's son was Obadiah. Obadiah's son was Shecaniah.

²² The six descendants of Shecaniah were Shemaiah and his sons: Hattush, Igal, Bariah, Neariah and Shaphat.

²³ Neariah's three sons were: Elioenai, Hizkiah and Azrikam.

²⁴ Elioenai seven sons were: Hodaviah, Eliashib, Pelaiah, Akkub, Johanan, Delaiah and Anani.

Other descendants of Judah

4 Judah's descendants were: Perez, Hezron, Carmi, Hur and Shobal. ² Shobal's son Reaiah became the father of Jahath. Jahath became the father of Ahumai and Lahad. Those were the ancestors of the Zorathite clans.

^3-4 Caleb's wife Ephrathah gave birth to their firstborn son, Hur. Hur was the ancestor of the people of Bethlehem. His three sons were Etam, Penuel and Ezer.

Etam's sons were: Jezreel, Ishma and Idbash. Their sister was Hazzelelponi. Penuel became the father of Gedor. Ezer became the father of Hushah.

The Jews say bad things about Paul

24 Five days after that, Ananias, the leader of the priests, went to Caesarea. Some important Jews went with him. A man called Tertullus also went with them. He was a lawyer. All these people went to meet with Felix, the ruler. They told Felix what Paul had done. Felix would judge who was right. ² Felix told a soldier to bring Paul to the meeting. Then Tertullus began to speak against Paul. He said, ‘Sir, you have ruled us well for many years. Because of you, our country has had no wars for a long time. You have made new laws that are good for our country. You have thought well about how you should lead us. ³ Everywhere, the people are happy about what you have done. So we want to thank you very much for all these good things. ⁴ I do not want you to sit here for a long time. So I will speak for a short time about our problem. Please be kind to us and listen to me.

⁵ We know that this man brings trouble everywhere. Anywhere in the world that Jewish people live, he makes them angry. Then they all fight each other. He is the leader of a group called the Nazarenes.’^[a]

⁶ ‘He also did bad things in the temple that are against our laws. So we took hold of him.^[b] [We wanted to judge him by what our own law says. ⁷ But Lysias, the leader of the soldiers, came to us. He attacked us and he took Paul away from us. ⁸ Then he told us to come and to speak to you about it.] You should ask this man some questions about what he has done. You will find out that what we say against him is true.’

⁹ The other Jews that were there also spoke against Paul. They said, ‘All these things that Tertullus has said are true.’

Paul tells Felix his own story

¹⁰ Then Felix raised his hand towards Paul to show that he should speak. So Paul said to Felix, ‘I know that you have judged the people in this region for many years. So now I am happy to tell you everything. ¹¹ I went to Jerusalem less than 12 days ago. You can check that that is true. I went there to worship God. ¹² When the Jews saw me in the temple, I was not arguing with anyone. I was not causing trouble among Jewish people in their meeting places. Nor did I cause problems in any other places in Jerusalem. ¹³ They have said bad things against me. But they cannot show you that these things are true. ¹⁴ What I do agree is this: I worship the same God that our Jewish ancestors worshipped. But I do this in the Way that Jesus has taught us. These men say that this is not the right way. But I believe in all God's Law that Moses wrote for us. I also believe in the messages that God's prophets have written in the Bible. ¹⁵ I also trust God like these men do. Like them, I believe that people will become alive again after death. God will do this for all people, both good people and bad people. ¹⁶ Because of that, I always try to do what is right. I do not want to do anything bad against God or against other people.

¹⁷ I had not been to Jerusalem for several years. Now I returned there with a gift of some money. I brought it to give to poor people who are Jews, like me. I also wanted to offer sacrifices to God. ¹⁸ I was doing this in the yard of the temple when these men found me. I had obeyed all the rules to make myself clean in front of God. There was no crowd with me. Nobody was arguing or fighting because of me. ¹⁹ But there were some Jews there who had come from Asia. They are the people who caused the trouble. Maybe they have something bad to say against me. They themselves should come here to speak to you about it. ²⁰ Or these men here should tell you what wrong thing I have done. I stood in front of the meeting of the Jewish leaders and they asked me questions. ²¹ When I stood there, I shouted, “I believe that dead people will rise and they will live again. That is the reason why you are judging me today.” They may think that is a wrong thing that I did.’

²² Felix knew much about the Way of the Lord Jesus. He now said that the meeting had finished. He said to Paul, ‘Soon Lysias, the leader of the soldiers, will arrive here. Then I will decide what to do with you.’ ²³ He said to the officer who was holding Paul, ‘Continue to guard this man carefully. But his friends can come and see him. They can help him and they can bring things for him.’

Felix and Drusilla listen to Paul

²⁴ After some days, Felix came with Drusilla, his Jewish wife. He told his soldiers to bring Paul to them. Paul talked to them, and they listened to everything that he said. Paul spoke about how people believed in Jesus, the Messiah. ²⁵ Paul continued to speak for some time. He said, ‘People need to do what is right. They need to stop themselves doing wrong things. One day, God will judge people for how they have lived.’

While Paul talked about these things, Felix became afraid. He said to Paul, ‘You can leave us now. At some time I may want to listen to you again. Then I will ask you to come to me again.’ ²⁶ But Felix also hoped that Paul would give him some money.^[c] For that reason he often met with Paul and they talked together.

²⁷ This happened for two years. Felix left Paul in the prison, because he wanted to make the Jewish leaders happy. Then Porcius Festus became the ruler instead of Felix.
